The Campyavan Code
Last updated: February 2026
These guidelines protect hosts, travelers, and the places we all love. Everyone who uses Campyavan agrees to follow this Code.
For Hosts
1. Be honest and accurate
Give travelers accurate information before they book.
- Use recent photos of where they'll actually camp
- Describe your site truthfully: size, terrain, amenities, and downsides (noise, animals, rough access)
- Be clear about what's included and any extra charges
- Set clear rules around quiet hours, rubbish removal policies, and if pets and children are allowed
- Keep your calendar up to date
2. Communicate clearly
Good communication makes everyone's experience better.
- Respond to booking requests within 24 hours
- Provide clear arrival instructions: check-in time, address, gate codes, parking location
- Share any hazards or access restrictions before they arrive
- Only cancel for genuine emergencies or safety concerns. Contact guests first if you must cancel. Frequent cancellations may result in listings being hidden or accounts suspended
3. Keep your site safe and tidy
Travelers are paying for a quality experience.
- Keep grass mowed and the site clear of rubbish and hazards
- Ensure amenities are clean and working
- Mark dangers clearly
- Inform guests about current fire restrictions at checkitsalright.nz
- Direct guests to the nearest rubbish disposal site and wastewater dump station where relevant
4. Know the rules
You're responsible for understanding and following local regulations.
- Follow your district council's rules on hosting campervans
- Understand and meet your tax obligations
- Comply with building standards if offering amenities
5. Treat everyone with respect
Campyavan is for everyone in Aotearoa.
- Zero tolerance for discrimination, harassment, or aggressive behavior
- Give travelers privacy once they're settled in
For Travellers
1. Respect the land and your hosts
You're a guest on someone's property. Help keep it beautiful.
- Follow house rules and keep noise down, especially at night
- Be considerate of neighbors (keep noise down, be discreet with outdoor activities)
- Tell hosts if you’re bringing pets and children. Supervise them at all times
- Stay within designated camping areas
- Zero tolerance for discrimination, harassment, or aggressive behaviour
2. Leave no trace
Aotearoa’s landscapes are fragile and precious. Leave every site better than you found it.
- Take all rubbish with you (unless rubbish disposal is offered)
- Never dump grey water on the ground. Only use designated dump stations
- Use onboard toilet systems if no facilities are provided. Never relieve yourself outdoors
- Don't damage vegetation, fences, or structures
3. Communicate clearly
Good communication makes everyone's experience better.
- Share your expected arrival and departure time
- Message your host if you're running late
- Give as much notice as possible if plans change
- If something gets damaged or goes wrong, tell your host immediately
4. Safety first
- Be aware of your camping environment. Don't park near livestock or under trees that look damaged or that can drop pinecones and branches.
- Ensure your vehicle is roadworthy, insured, and suitable for the terrain
- Check weather and road conditions before traveling
- Never light open fires or use fireworks
- Ask hosts for permission before using BBQs or gas cookers and check fire safety rules at checkitsalright.nz
- Secure your own valuables at all times
